These Aren’t Your Mother’s Prom Hairstyles

For Long Hair

An elegant twist. If you have artificially highlighted hair, this is a great way to show it off. Gather loose twists into an overall sleek, simple effect. Use only a minimal amount of hairspray so the look says you’re perfectly comfortable in an imperfect world.

A sectioned updo. For this impressive style, section off the hair. Roll the different sections and pin them at random at the back of the head. This is great with straight hair or thick hair.

Loose bun perfection. This works great for thick hair and Black hair. Secure the hair in a loose ponytail with an elastic. Wrap and twist into a messy bun, looping the ends through the elastic. Use your fingers to loosen the hair in front to create texture. Add a headband near the hairline and a second about three inches behind the first. Bump the hair up between the bands.

For Short or Medium Hair

If you have medium-length or short hair, varied and spectacular styles are popping for 2017.

Fake wet head. This look is great for short or medium hair. Part the hair where you like and then use a flat iron to straighten. Apply pomade root to tip until every strand it completely covered. Slick down strays with a comb.

Cornrow undercut. Part hair on one side and then create tight cornrow braids using all the hair below the part. Follow the contour of your head to end the braid at nape. Secure with a bobby pin or clear hair elastic.

Valentino’s bubble ponytail. This style is great for shorter hair or rainbow colored hair. Looks just as exotic with natural hair colors.

Asymmetrical curly fun. Can’t decide on curly or slick? Do both with a sleek side part and braid. The remaining hair springs into a nest of natural curls.
