Salt Water OceanYou wouldn’t want to miss a day at the beach just because you recently colored your hair, but what will the salt water do to your beautiful locks? Learn what effects salt water can have on your recently colored hair and how to keep hair healthy.

A summertime trip to the ocean can be just what the doctor ordered to relax your mind and body, but not so much for your hair. Sun, sand and salt do not necessarily combine as a restorative mixture, especially for colored or damaged hair.

But what about all those beauty routines that include sea salt? Salt does have healing properties when used in moderation. It can reduce swelling, help with healing wounds and provide a detoxing effect for your skin. However, too much salt, such as the high-saline concentration in seawater, can damage your hair.

Healthy hair contains a high water content that makes it elastic and soft. If you color your hair, the water content of each strand is already compromised. Salt water grabs even more of this needed moisture from your hair, making it brittle and causing breakage if not replenished.

So does this mean you have to skip the shore? Not at all. There are several steps you can take to protect your hair.

Before you leave for your day at the beach:

Wash your hair with a conditioner to increase moisture.

Spray with a leave-in conditioner to continue replenishing hair.

Apply sunscreen to your part to protect hair follicles from losing excess moisture.

At the beach:

Wet your hair with regular water before you enter the ocean to help reduce saline seeping in.

Rinse your hair immediately after leaving the water.

Reapply leave-in spray conditioner throughout the day.

After leaving the beach:

Rinse hair thoroughly to remove leftover traces of salt.

Use a hair mask to replenish moisture and shine.

Just because you color your hair doesn’t mean you have to miss out on all the sun and fun. Protect your hair from the drying effects of salt water with these pre- and post-visit measures to keep your hair looking and feeling great.
