September

Alopecia is a condition affecting many adults and children, though little is known about it. The auto-immune disease causes sudden patchy or total hair loss.

September is Alopecia Awareness Month. It aims to create awareness about the disease and raise money for hair loss charities. Read on to discover more about alopecia and its awareness month.

What Is Alopecia?

Alopecia areata is an auto-immune disorder causing hair loss. The body’s immune system turns against the healthy hair follicles, causing hair to fall out in round patches.

Hair loss is different for people with this condition. For some people, hair falls out in spots and grows over time, while others experience total hair loss. Below are some of the different types of alopecia based on the extent of hair loss.

Alopecia Areata Totalis. Patients experience complete loss of hair on their heads.

Diffuse Alopecia Areata. This is the thinning of hair instead of hair loss.

Alopecia Areata Universalis. Patients lose all the hair in their bodies.

Ophiasis Alopecia Areata. Hair loss occurs rounds the back and sides of your head.

Causes and Treatments of Alopecia

The actual cause of alopecia is not entirely understood. Many ongoing research studies seek to understand alopecia and its causes. Stress and genetic composition are associated with the disease.

Alopecia does not have a cure. Some people with the condition experience and recovers from it without any medications. Others do not recover and choose to wear wigs and caps.

Alopecia Awareness Month

An entire month (September) is allocated to promote Alopecia awareness in the country and across the globe. Although the condition affects many people, not many know they suffer from the disease.

Different awareness incentives are used to inform the public about the disease. Social media photos and videos help many discover the illness and its impacts.

Awareness campaign participants wear a blue ribbon (the color of alopecia awareness) to show support for people suffering from the disease. They also shed light on the emotional and mental trauma associated with the disease.

You could offer support to alopecia patients by creating an awareness fundraiser for hair loss charities. These organizations do fantastic work organizing support groups for people with alopecia. They also provide advice, headwear, and free wigs to people with the condition.
