While many of us assume that most hair care products are safe for our hair, the fact of the matter is many of them do more harm than good. Although we are finally in the midst of a bit of a hair care revolution, in which many people are starting to demand products that are actually natural and healthy for their hair, we still have a long way to go. With that in mind, here is a list of ways to know if yours are damaging your hair.
Residue on Scalp
Do you have white residue on your scalp after you apply products? This is a sign that they may cause damaged hair. However, this may simply result from overuse on your part. White residue is a sign that a product has built up on your scalp. You may be using too much of the product and not washing your hair properly and/or often enough to avoid this side effect.
Stiff Hair
If your hair is overly stiff, this is a sign that your products are damaging your hair. If your hair is stiff to the touch, can’t hold a curl, or looks frayed on the ends, the products you use — shampoo, conditioner, styler, etc. — are leading to damaged hair. In fact, this is a sign that your hair has been over-processed or chemically damaged. Therefore, if your hair is in this state, you may need to reduce the amount of chemicals you use and also switch up the products.
Dry Hair
One of the top signs that your hair products may be the cause of your damaged hair is that your hair is overly dry. In general, dry hair is a sign of unhealthy hair. If your hair seems to be dry, no matter how much you apply a particular product, this is a sign that your products are causing the dryness.
Overall, there are plenty of signs that your hair products are damaging your hair. If your hair is dry and/or stiff, or if you have white residue on your scalp, you are using the wrong products on your hair or too much of the products on your hair. Either way, if you have damaged hair or your hair seems to be unhealthy, one of the best things you can do is find products that counteract the issues you are experiencing. For instance, if you have overly dry hair, you might try a new leave-in or deep conditioner.
