Hair loss and baldness are facts of life that people of any gender might have to face as they age. Most people know about male pattern baldness, but did you know that female pattern hair loss exists too? We explain the facts about this often-misunderstood condition, how it may affect women and what can be done about it.

Female Pattern Hair Loss – The Science

As women get older, their hair naturally starts to thin. This is due to androgenetic alopecia, or hair loss caused by genetics. Both men and women experience this type of baldness, but it presents differently. This is due to the difference in hormones across the genders and typical genetic traits inherited from parents.

For men, balding tends to occur as a gradually receding hairline. For women, fewer and fewer hairs renew after their resting phase. This leads to an overall thinning of hair, which may even leave patches of the scalp visible. Women may notice additional hairs on the pillow or coming off on their brush or comb. While it’s completely natural, it can be distressing to realize your luscious locks are saying goodbye.

Other Causes of Hair Loss

As well as genetic female pattern hair loss, there are other factors that could impact the quality of your hair.

Over-styling can damage your hair, particularly heat treatments or harsh chemicals

Telogen effluvium is a type of hair loss often caused by stress or trauma[i]

Some medications have side effects that include hair loss

Some illnesses cause hair thinning or loss, such as lupus

Women may also notice their hair thins after pregnancy

Alopecia areata causes hair to fall out in patches and could be linked to immune system issues

The Impact of Hair Loss

Losing your hair can be traumatic. That’s not an overstatement. Many people’s hair is tied to their character and personality and if they can’t cut or style it the way they’re used to having it, it can be shocking. Bald patches or visible scalp can also be distressing and lead to lower self-esteem, or even mental health issues.

You can mitigate some types of hair loss by:

Avoiding or reducing stress.

Boosting your protein or B vitamin intake.

Some medications may help – speak to a doctor.

Likewise, a doctor may switch your medications if the side effects are causing hair loss.
