hair extensionsIf you’ve ever shopped around for products that provide volume for thinning hair, then you’ve likely noticed the never-ending list of items on the market for this common problem. You can find anything from volumizing shampoo, cream, spray, and so on. Some people have great results with these type of products, while others might not notice a change. Aside from using products on your hair to increase volume, you might be surprised to learn that you can actually use hair extensions for this as well.

It really just depends on your hair, and what works best for you. If your hair is fine or thinning, then this might be a better option for you. Here’s an overview of what to expect when considering hair extensions.

Synthetic Versus Human Hair

Before considering hair extensions, the first thing you should do is find out the difference between synthetic and human hair. There are good qualities to both, but like with anything else, you might find things you like or dislike about it. It’s mostly a matter of preference. You can see the pros and cons to each below.

Synthetic Hair:

Pros:  Synthetic extensions are typically more affordable then human hair. You can still find good quality synthetic hair that will look and feel realistic. Depending on how much volume you want in your hair, will determine how many extensions you’ll need. This is where synthetic hair can be a big money saver.

Cons: The main drawback on this type, is the fact that it’s artificial. This means that you won’t be able to color, or use any type of heat on the hair without damaging it.

Human Hair:

Pros: The biggest advantage for human hair is that it’s natural. You can do anything to it, that you would do to your own hair. You can color it, use heat to style the extensions, as well as cut it to your desired length. If coloring hair is not for you, then you’ll be glad to know that it’s much easier to find a hair color that will match your own with human hair.

Cons: The biggest drawback with human hair extensions are the fact that they cost more money than synthetic hair. While it’s definitely worth the price, it might not be an affordable option for everyone.

Clip-in Versus Fusion Extensions

Another thing to consider before shopping for hair extensions is the type of hair extension you want. Some people prefer the clip-in option because it’s quick and convenient, while others prefer fusion hair extensions because they last longer. Here are the pros and cons to each.

Clip-in:

Pros: The nice thing about clip-in hair extensions is the fact that you can do it yourself. It’s very simple to put on and take back off. You can put it on at home, on your work break, and even in your vehicle. All you need to do is separate your hair into sections, and clip it on. It’s not much different than using a barrette. If you feel like you didn’t secure it on well, you can unclip it and try again. Another great thing about the clip-in extension, is that it’s the cheapest option.

Cons: Clip-in hair extensions are usually really easy to secure on your hair. However, some people that are new to using extensions might have a difficult time at first. Once you get used to it, you’ll be fine. One last con is the fact that you’ll need to take them out each time you have to wash your hair, and put it back on again. It can be a bit repetitive after a while.

Fusion:

Pros: The biggest advantage of fusion hair extensions, is the amount of time you can wear them for. Most fusion hair extensions last up to four months long, if properly secured by a professional hair stylist. Clip-in extensions usually come with four or more strips of hair that go from ear to ear, while fusion extensions are actually secured by small strands of hair one at a time. This allows the stylist to bond each piece of hair to your natural hair, for a more secure and longer hold.

Cons: The two drawbacks with this method are the cost and time it takes. Fusion hair extensions can be pretty expensive. The time it takes from start to finish can be three hours or more. While they look natural and the end results are worth it, you’ll need to consider if it’s worth investing in. Keep in mind that if you want to continue having extensions, you will need to go back every few months.

As you can see, there are pros and cons to each. All of these options have good qualities and features, but some come at a higher price. Only you can decide what works best for you and your budget. Any of these choices are good to consider for those with thinning hair, that are trying to add some more volume to their hair. No matter what your hair type is, hair extensions can have many beneficial uses for you.
