Mother DaughterDear Mom, I see it when you look in the mirror. You’re worried, disappointed and a little deflated. You stand there, slowly running the hairbrush through your thinning hair. Maybe you think that if you brush very gently, you’ll find less hair entwined in the bristles when you’re done. I watch out of the corner of my eye as you set your hairbrush down. It’s like the brush is a weapon and you’ve lost the battle. You look so unhappy, Mom. My heart breaks for you.

For years you brushed my hair every morning, twisting it lovingly into knots, braids and ponytails. Sometimes you’d let me brush your hair too. How I loved to clip every barrette I had into your curls! I always ruined your beautiful hairstyle, but you never seemed to mind. Those moments seemed to define what motherhood is all about.

I offered to brush your hair the other day, for old time’s sake. You pulled the hairbrush away and declined quietly, saying, “You don’t have to worry about doing that.” I know you’re embarrassed, Mom. But you don’t have to be.

Don’t you know that about half of women over 50 suffer from hair loss? This means that every other woman you meet over the age of 50 has thinning hair. Why should any of you be ashamed of that? Like wrinkles, gray hair and age spots, thinning hair is simply an outward sign that you have lived a full and beautiful life, and that is a mark of true beauty.

This time of year, when we all think about how much our mothers have given us, I think about this: I don’t want you to look in the mirror as if searching for a lost younger version of yourself. You deserve better than that. I want you to feel radiant and beautiful. So, please, stop hiding and feeling ashamed. Whether it’s getting fitted for a partial hairpiece or a chic wig — or even if it means cutting your hair short and going au naturel, do what it takes to make yourself feel beautiful again. Whatever you do, I will be very proud to stand by your side.
And no matter what, Mom, know this: You will always be beautiful to me.

Love,

Your Daughter
