Platelet-rich plasma therapy, or “PRP,” is a promising regenerative treatment giving new hope to people living with hair loss. The Asian Journal of Transfusion Science describes how specialists inject a small amount of the patient’s own plasma that contains a large concentration of his or her platelets into the scalp to stimulate hair regrowth.

Men and women 18 to 70 years of age with mild to moderate alopecia are usually good PRP candidates. According to the Journal of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery, many patients have tried other therapies like FDA-approved minoxidil — but these treatments have low rates of patient satisfaction and include several undesirable side effects such as decreased libido and prolonged impotence.

Recent studies of PRP have demonstrated good hair growth with minimal side effects. Patients see improvement in as little as seven days.

Studies with PRP

In a study by the Journal of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery, 20 people underwent three PRP sessions with a booster after six months. Their hair density significantly increased in three months, and it continued growing up to 12 months later. About 85 percent of patients reported improvement in hair quality and thickness. No patients reported more hair shedding, infections or bruising.

In a clinical study published by BioMed Research International, 10 men receiving PRP treatments three times in three months experienced a mean increase of 18 hairs compared to a mean decrease of two hairs with placebo trials. Total hair density also increased with PRP after 3 months without any major side effects.

The Asian Journal of Transfusion Science also shared a third study in which 10 people received PRP injections every two to three weeks for three months. New hair grew in six patients after seven days, and all 10 patients experienced improvement in hair thickness, hair root strength and overall alopecia.

PRP: A viable choice

While larger studies are under way, results have proved that PRP is a viable choice for hair regrowth for many people. Ask a physician to learn more about the specific requirements for PRP patients.
