hair extensionsHair extensions may be applied for a variety of reasons, such as adding definition and volume to your natural hair before attending a major event, or to provide a healthier appearance while you’re recovering from hair loss.

Human hair extensions may last anywhere from weeks to months, depending on the quality of the product. More importantly, the longevity of extensions is determined by the level of care that owners provide. Hair extensions require routine washing and treatment just like natural hair but they are more delicate and should be provided with greater care. There are two major types of extensions: temporary and permanent – each with varying maintenance requirements.

Temporary Hair Extensions Care

These options last for less than a month and are easily attached and removed from natural hair. Common styles include clip-on, weaves, and wefts. They are usually available in larger pieces and should never be washed together with natural hair (as this might damage the product).

Instead, temporary hair extensions should be removed and washed in a basin or sink. Use a mixture of moisturizing shampoo and warm water. Soak the extensions in the basin/sink for about 10 minutes before rinsing it with cold water. Cold water will enable moisture to hold the hair in place while avoiding tangles.

Routine conditioning is highly recommended, as it provides the extensions with a beautiful shine and healthier appearance. Individuals sporting braids, weaves and other thicker extensions may consider leave-in conditioners for improved effect – they may be left to sit in extensions overnight upon washing.

Permanent Hair Extensions Care

Permanent extensions can last for months with proper care and maintenance. These may come in the form of reusable microrings or microbonds and are attached strand by strand. As these blends seamlessly with natural hair, they may be washed together.

However, sulfate shampoos (these are the foam-forming products) should be avoided. Although sulfates are effective cleaning agents, they are also known to remove the natural oils (sebum) from hair, which causes dryness, frizzy effects and split ends. Unlike natural hair, extensions are unable to replenish natural oils – leading to permanent damage.

General Care

Additionally, there are some general tips that apply. They should not be washed as regularly as natural hair, as the process wears them out quickly- 3-4 times a week would be ideal. Also, never sleep while extensions are wet as this snags and damages natural hair when tossing and turning in bed.
