Safety Film vs Security Film

Do You Know the Difference?

Why Safety Film vs Security Film? The history of active shooter attacks in schools has created an issue administrators and facility directors need to take seriously and address. For example, the attack on both Sandy Hook Elementary School and Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School resulted in devastating loss of life because both active shooters were able to easily penetrate glass by shooting through it. Many believe that applying safety film to vulnerable glass areas sounds like a perfectly viable solution.

What is Safety Film?

Standard safety film is a clear, scratch resistant film which runs from 4mil up to 14mil, and is applied to existing glass to keep it from shattering and causing harm or serious injury. It is typically used to protect against accidents, Earthquakes, storms, break-ins, or vandalism. A standard safety film will not protect against an active shooter. There are brands out in the market today claiming that this type of film can be used to slow down an active shooter. Without shooter attack certification, no window film can make this claim.

What is Security Film?

Security film takes safety film a step further by making it not only shatter proof but also much more difficult to breach. A delay in breaching can provide valuable time for those inside the building to escape out a different exit, hide, and call the authorities. This in turn gives first responders more time to arrive on scene and diffuse the situation.

Are they Bulletproof?

Many are under the misconception that safety film and security film are bulletproof. They are not bulletproof. There is no such thing as a bulletproof window film. Again, there is no such thing as bulletproof window film. Bullets will go through safety and security film, but it will be very difficult to break through the film even after it’s been shot. In order to receive a bullet-resistant rating (which is not the same as bulletproof) you must move up to a certified ballistic rated glass which will not be as cost effective.

It is recommended by subject matter experts in active shooter that all glass in school entrances and vestibules be protected with a sufficient security film. The strongest security film available on the market today is 23mil.
