bald

Hair loss happens to everyone. In fact, you lose up to 100 hairs every single day[i]. But when it stops growing back, it can be alarming.

Baldness is the gradual loss of hair across part or all of the head. It affects 85% of men over 50, and 25% of those may experience some baldness by the time they’re 21 years old[ii]. Not sure if you’re likely to go bald as you get older? We highlight the top signs to look out for and explain why men go bald in the first place.

Male Pattern Baldness Explained

Most male hair loss stems from male pattern baldness. Also called “androgenetic alopecia,” this is a genetic, hereditary condition. This type of hair loss is a result of the effects of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This hormone can cause hair follicles to shrink, impacting the growth of new hair and gradually stopping it altogether. This leaves patches of bare scalp.

Signs You Might Be Balding

These are the tops signs that could show you’re going bald. Male pattern baldness is a natural, genetic condition, which means it affects everyone slightly differently. If you notice any of these signs, it could be time to talk to a hair loss specialist.

Increased Hair Shedding

If you brush or comb your hair regularly, you may notice much more hair coming off your scalp every time. You may also notice additional hairs on your pillow in the morning, or in the bottom of your shower.

Visible Scalp

If you suddenly notice that skin on your scalp is visible where it wasn’t before, there’s a good chance you’re going bald.

Itchy or Flaky Scalp

Your scalp could be itchy for any number of reasons, from dryness to an allergic reaction. However, some forms of alopecia also cause a mild itching sensation. Always talk to a medical professional about the sudden onset of itching anywhere on your body.

Hair Growth Appears to Slow

You used to have to get a haircut every week, but suddenly it doesn’t seem to need it quite so often. Baldness naturally thins the hair, which can affect the style and how long it appears — even though it doesn’t directly affect the length or how fast it grows.

Obvious Bald Spots

If you’ve started to notice one or more patches on your head that simply have no hair where they used to, it’s definitely time to speak to a professional about your baldness.
